How to study
Reveal a definition
Open Learning or Known on the home screen. Tap the card to switch between the word and its definition. The definition side also shows the part of speech.
Sort a card
Tap Known or Learning to put the current card at the end of that list. The next card appears. The home screen shows the number of cards in each list.
Undo a decision
Swipe from left to right across a card to reverse the most recent sorting decision in the current study session. You can repeat the swipe to undo earlier decisions from that session.
Browse a word list
Tap the deck title, Known Words or Learning Words, at the top of the screen. The list shows each word, its definition, part of speech and frequency count from the source corpus.
Common questions
Does studying require internet access?
No. All cards and definitions are bundled in the app. Links to source websites open separately and require an internet connection.
Where is my progress saved?
Your Known and Learning lists are saved locally between launches. The app does not sync them to a server. Deleting the app removes its local data. Apple device backups may include app data depending on your settings.
Why do some words appear more than once?
The deck has 1,000 vocabulary cards. A word used as more than one part of speech can have separate cards, such as a noun card and a verb card.
Where do the words and definitions come from?
This second deck continues after the first Shakespeare Flashcards deck, with 1,000 vocabulary cards selected from COCA ranks 1,202 to 2,270. Vocabulary selection and frequency counts use the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Definitions are the first listed sense for the word and its part of speech in WordNet 3.0. For words with several meanings, that sense may differ from the meaning you usually encounter. Source details are also available from the question-mark button on the home screen.
